Working under the supervision of Nick Smiley, Clara has gained hands-on experience as an extern, legal assistant, and now intern, has previously worked on a statewide economic justice campaign supporting community college students, and managed college access programs in Washington. Clara is committed to providing strong, compassionate defense for individuals navigating the criminal justice system. She knew she wanted to be a public defender before law school and has tailored her education accordingly, attending Idaho State’s Public Defense College. Clara brings this deep-rooted dedication to her legal work—ensuring every client feels seen, heard, and powerfully represented.

Nicholas L. Smiley
Nicholas (Nick) Smiley is the managing attorney at Smiley Law Office LLP and is a versatile defense litigator. His practice includes the representation of private and court appointed clients in criminal defense, family law, and civil law throughout the Palouse Region. Client engagement is central to successful defense litigation, and Nick is committed to maintaining a high level of communication with all his clients and manages these relationships with transparency and client engagement. Nick works in legal defense because he believes that everyone deserves compassionate legal representation, regardless their charge or economic status, and that it is important to hold the State and their agents accountable.
